If there's anything we love about social media these days it's how easy it is to find a good hack, even when it comes to keeping your bananas from going off.

The handy thing is you can use items you probably already have hanging around the house such as clingfilm or tinfoil.

Wet tissue paper could also do the trick.

The biggest mistake a lot of us make with storing bananas is wrapping the fruit up completely.

While this can be a great storage mechanism for veggies such as salad and spinach to avoid wilting and keep them pest free, it's not the case for the banana and we need to get out of this habit.

This can actually cause them to ripen faster as ethylene gas will not be able to escape from the bag, causing the fruits to go off explains Balcony garden web.

Instead of wrapping and sealing the whole fruit, aim to cover the stem only.

This works because covering the area where the ethylene gas that is produced naturally during the ripening means the process will be slowed down.

Leaving the stems uncovered means the gas can quickly reach other parts of the fruit, causing them to ripen.

Covering the stem of each banana separately should keep your bananas in good check for longer, rather than wrapping the stem as a bunch.
