Urgent warning to dog owner over deadly risk of puddles to your pet

Aug 25, 2023Aug 25, 2023

AN URGENT warning has been issued to dog owners over the deadly risk of puddles to pets.

While most dogs take up any opportunity to jump into water, it can be hazardous to their health.

This is due to potentially harmful bacteria and toxins that can build up in stagnant water, Pet MD warns.

The most common bacteria found in puddles is leptospirosis, which can have serious consequences and cause symptoms including chronic kidney or liver disease.

If untreated, the disease can also become fatal.

Leptospirosis is carried via rat urine, with the rodents commonly using puddles to bathe.

Another harmful bacteria is giardia - a microscopic parasite harmful to dogs if ingested.

The parasite attacks the lining of a pet's intestines and can cause severe diarrhoea

Symptoms can also include dramatic weight loss vomiting, dramatic weight loss and nausea.

If giardia is left untreated, dogs can suffer long-term ill health or possibly even die.

Pet MD also warns of other toxins such as pesticides and antifreeze that can be washed into puddles.

It urges dog owners to keep their pets away from puddles following recent rainstorms, nullifying the risk of walking through contaminated water.

It has also advised owners to use rain boots on their dogs and wash their paws as soon as they arrive home from a walk outside.

This should be completed using unscented wipes or dish soap.

It comes after dog owners were also warned over the risk of sharing a bed with their pet.

Another pet owner took to TikTok for another warning over mould.
